This blog sure was a good idea, huh.

Jesus, the more I try to write about myself online, the more it comes off as a self-absorbed Livejournal entry. It's like graffiti on a wall that even the vandal doesn't give a shit about.

It's not that things aren't going well; I just don't seem to be able to convincingly write about them in anything other than Plain Truth.

"Book Condition: Fair. cover worn, repaired with tape, marginalia, tobacco odor."
Rifftrax Live was an odd experience. On the one hand, it had a new short, Flying Stewardesses, which was very funny and well done. We were treated to some genuinely entertaining ad-style shorts produced by Rich "Lowtax" Kyanka from SomethingAwful.com. The movie itself was well done and had a lot of new riff material. The occasional split screen was displayed, where we were able to watch the riffers do their thing; excellent insight into the apparent craft of riffing, and also genuinely entertaining.

On the other hand, we were made to endure two songs by the immensely over-popular and under-talented Jonathan Coulton, another pretty terrible song by The Rifftones (comprised of Mike/Kevin/Bill) and Coulton, And while Lowtax may be a great absurdist comedy writer, his attempts to translate that to his performance behavior are dismal.

It's really clear that Rifftrax Live was planned for filling out two full hours of time. But because of the schedule structure of the musical acts and riffing, the energy of the total performance took weird twists and turns, leaving the viewer a bit frazzled by the time the main picture started. And since Plan 9 takes some effort to sit all the way through, riffs or no, my friends and I were pretty shagged out by halfway through it.

The whole crowd seemed to manage a second wind in the last third of the movie, as the riffs got more intense and the movie became more ludicrous. And, as with all things RiffTrax, the whole performance ended a scant two minutes after the movie itself.

With only a few technical glitches, a lot to laugh about, and time well spent with friends, RiffTrax live was actually really well done. The riff trio adding...things simply detracts from their bread and butter, and that is making movies funny.
